Why I Love Rainbow Eating (and How It’s About So Much More Than Food)

When most people hear the term “eat the rainbow”, they think of colorful fruits and veggies on a plate. Yes, that’s part of it, but what I love about Dr. Deanna Minich’s Whole Detox approach is that it takes this concept so much deeper. It’s not just about food; it’s about creating balance in your entire life! Body, mind, and soul.

If you’ve ever felt like your nutrition is “good” but you’re still stressed, low-energy, or just off, this is where mindset and mental health come into play. Additionally, if you're wanting to be healthier but are confused by all the contradictory information online, this is where a structure of rainbow eating can go a long way. Whole Detox helps us understand that what we put on our plate doesn't have to be complicated and how our food is connected to our emotions, our habits, and even the narratives we tell ourselves.

Food + Feelings = Transformation

Each color of the rainbow corresponds to an area of our physical AND emotional health. For example:

  • Red foods like strawberries or beets? They’re all about safety, grounding, and feeling secure.

  • Orange foods like carrots or oranges? Creativity and connection.

  • Green foods (think kale, broccoli, herbs)? Love, compassion, and growth.

When we eat with intention and include all these colors we’re not just nourishing our cells. We’re nourishing our emotions, our creativity, our sense of belonging. That’s powerful!

Why This Matters for Mental Health

So often, we approach “health” with a checklist: eat clean, exercise, sleep more. But what about joy? Connection? Self-expression? When those things are missing, it doesn’t matter how perfect your diet looks. You can still feel depleted.

Rainbow eating reminds us that wellness is multi-dimensional. Adding color to your plate can be an act of self-care, a daily ritual that says: I’m choosing balance: not just physically, but emotionally, too.

Want to Go Deeper? Join Us This Sunday

I’m beyond excited because this Sunday, Dr. Deanna Minich, the creator of the Whole Detox program and one of my former professors during my Master’s in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, is joining our Sunday Accountability Group live on Zoom!

She has an incredible gift for simplifying nutrition science and weaving it together with mindset and lifestyle in a way that just clicks. If you can make it live, amazing! But if not, I’ll have the recording available for you to watch later.

Plus, this kicks off something new and exciting: we’re launching a Whole Detox Book Club on September 22nd, and at the end, we’ll do the full 21-day Whole Detox together. We'll complete the 21-day Whole Detox just before the holiday season goes into full swing. The holidays will be here before you know it! What if you entered them feeling clear-headed, calm, and connected to your purpose? If you’ve been craving a reset, not just for your body, but for your mind and spirit, this is the perfect way to start.

If you want a preview of some of the foods on the 21-day Whole Detox plan, you can check out this Instagram post here

Summer Has Been a Crazy Season

If you’re like me, summer felt like a whirlwind. Between travel, kids’ schedules, social events, and all the little curveballs life throws, it’s easy for routines to slip. Honestly, I think that’s part of what makes summer beautiful. It's a season of flexibility, spontaneity, and soaking up the moment.

But there’s something grounding about fall. It’s a natural invitation to slow down, get back into rhythm, and reconnect with the habits that make us feel good in our bodies and minds.

I love this time of year for setting intentions. Not in a rigid, “perfect plan” kind of way, but as a gentle recommitment to ourselves. Maybe that means more home-cooked meals, more color on your plate, or carving out time to breathe and check in with yourself. It’s about shifting from that expansive summer energy to a more rooted, focused space where we can nourish our bodies and minds for the months ahead.

HartsSpace has all kinds of offerings to get focused, connected, and start putting yourself first. Check out our events page for our current happenings!

With all that, I hope you are enjoying all the last bits of sunshine! Hope to see you at one of our groups or events moving forward.
